To pair a wireless controller to the Cronus Zen, press the Zen's P2 button so its RGB LEDs flash blue, then put the pad in pairing mode: Share and PS on a DualShock 4, Create and PS on a DualSense, the sync button on a Switch Pro Controller or Joy-Con. Xbox pads cannot pair by Bluetooth and need the Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3. What goes wrong is around that: the pad reconnecting to the console, the wrong combo, a pad Cronus lists without Bluetooth support, or an authentication pad that must stay wired. This page has Cronus's pairing steps per brand, the failure list, and the wired-or-wireless choice.

## What Bluetooth on the Zen is for

| Role | Can be wireless? | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Authentication pad on A1 (Xbox, PS4) | No | A1 is a USB port; [the authentication controller](/docs/cronus-zen-authentication-controller) |
| The pad you play with | Yes | Cronus's Device panel says anything on Bluetooth reaches the console as whatever the A1 pad reports |
| The pad on PS5 | Yes, with limits | Pairs to the Zen with P2; Cronus lists a DualSense over Bluetooth without adaptive triggers, rumble, gyro, mic or 3.5 mm headset audio |
| Mouse or keyboard | No Bluetooth | Cronus's older supported-mice list: wireless mice use their own USB dongle; Bluetooth is not supported. [Mouse and keyboard](/docs/cronus-zen-mouse-and-keyboard) |
| Connection to the console | No | Always wired from CONSOLE/PC |
| Headset audio through the pad | No | Cronus: no 3.5 mm audio or mic support over a Bluetooth controller connection |

## Pairing procedure, from Cronus's guide

| Step | Do | What you see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Console off, or out of range, so the pad has one host to find | |
| 2 | Press **P2** on the Zen, the left Bluetooth pairing button; P1 and P2 are the two large blue buttons either side of the OLED | RGB LEDs flash blue |
| 3 | Pad into pairing mode (table below) | Pad light flashing |
| 4 | Wait | The pad's lights and the Zen's LEDs stop flashing and stay solid; on a PlayStation pad both turn solid blue |
| 5 | Press a button on the pad | The console responds |

| Pad | Pairing mode |
| --- | --- |
| DualShock 4 | Hold Share and PS until the light bar flashes |
| DualSense, DualSense Edge | Hold Create and PS until the light bar flashes. Cronus lists Bluetooth as limited: adaptive triggers, rumble, gyro and mic do not work. Its Switch page lists the DualSense as USB only |
| Switch Pro Controller | Hold the sync button until the player LEDs flash; they stop flashing and stay solid once paired |
| Joy-Con | Set the Zen's output protocol to NINTENDO SWITCH first. Press P2 and hold the left Joy-Con's sync button until its player LEDs flash: after a few seconds the Zen's LEDs turn red and the Joy-Con vibrates. Then hold the right one's sync button until it vibrates |
| PlayStation Move | One at a time: tap P2 and hold the Move's sync button, then repeat for the second |
| Xbox Series, Xbox One | Not over Bluetooth. Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3; connect the pad to A2 by cable, wait a few seconds, unplug it; the adapter's LED blinks, then turns solid white when the pad is paired |

The Zen remembers paired pads until you clear them: desktop Zen Studio's Device panel calls this Clear BT Devices, and Zen Studio Live has a clear Bluetooth action. If the console claims it first when you wake it, see the failure table.

## Why it fails

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pad lights up and the console responds, not the Zen | The pad reconnected to the console, its last host | Turn the console off, forget the pad on the console, pair again |
| Blue flashes forever | Pad not in pairing mode, or too far away | Hold the combo until the pad's light flashes; pair close to the Zen |
| Blue flashes forever with an Xbox pad | Cronus lists no Bluetooth support for Xbox pads | Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3; the A2 cable step |
| Blue flashes forever with a DualSense | Share and PS held instead of Create and PS; on Switch, Cronus lists the DualSense as USB only | Create and PS; on Switch, USB on A3 |
| Pairs, then drops | Low battery; Cronus warns a controller might not charge through the Zen | Charge it or fit fresh batteries |
| Repeated disconnections after pairing several devices | Cronus says pairings can become corrupt, especially after pairing more than one device | Clear BT Devices, below |
| Pairs, input is late or stutters | Radio latency plus interference | Cable for timing games; [input lag](/docs/cronus-zen-input-lag) |
| Pairs, some buttons do nothing | Wrong output protocol for the console | Check the Zen's output setting in Zen Studio |
| Was paired, now will not | A phone or PC took the pairing | Forget the pad on the other device |
| No headset audio | No 3.5 mm audio over a Bluetooth controller connection, per Cronus | Connect the pad by USB |
| A licensed third-party pad will not work over Bluetooth on PS4 | Cronus says some need a DualShock 4 v2 AUTH controller on A1 | DualShock 4 v2 on A1 |

## Clearing old pairings

Cronus's Clear BT Devices procedure, from the Zen Studio Device panel page in its older guide:

1. Turn off the device you want to unpair. For a controller, hold the Xbox or PS button for 5 to 15 seconds until its LED turns off.
2. In Zen Studio, open the Device tab and press **Clear BT Devices**. Confirm until the status bar says all registered Bluetooth devices have been cleared.
3. Disconnect all USB cables from the Zen.
4. Pair that device to something other than the Zen. Cronus says otherwise it will keep trying to pair to the Zen and cause disconnections.
5. Use the Zen again, pairing only the pad you want.

Cronus's current guide is built around Zen Studio Live, the browser-based version of Zen Studio, which has the same clear Bluetooth action among its device tools. Update the Zen first if you can: Cronus's changelog says firmware 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) fixed clearing Bluetooth not fully clearing or unpairing a connected device.

## Bluetooth versus adapter versus cable

| | Cable on A3 | Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3 | Zen Bluetooth (P2) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Setup | Plug in | Adapter plus the A2 cable step, once | P2 and the pad's combo, once |
| Latency | Lowest | Lower than Bluetooth, per Cronus | Highest of the three |
| Controller audio | Supported, with a USB-connected pad | Cronus says wireless loses controller audio | No 3.5 mm audio, per Cronus |
| Interference | None | Cronus says the adapter uses 5 GHz, where home network traffic can cause disconnects | Shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi |
| Best for | Timing scripts | Xbox pads | DualShock 4 and Nintendo pads |

[Wired vs wireless controllers on the Zen](/docs/wired-vs-wireless-controllers-cronus-zen) is the longer version.

## Quick reference

| You see | First check |
| --- | --- |
| Console responds instead of the Zen | Console off; forget the pad on it |
| Blue flashing, never stops | Pad's pairing mode and distance; Create and PS on a DualSense; Xbox pads need the adapter |
| Drops after minutes | Battery; Clear BT Devices |
| Late inputs | Go wired |
| No headset audio | Go wired |

## FAQ

**How do I pair a wireless controller to the Cronus Zen?**

Press P2 on the Zen; its LEDs flash blue. Then put the pad in pairing mode: Share and PS on a DualShock 4, Create and PS on a DualSense, the sync button on a Switch Pro Controller or Joy-Con. Xbox pads pair through the Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3 instead.

**Can the authentication pad be wireless?**

No. A1 is a USB port, and every crossover setup in Cronus's guide connects the matching controller to it by cable. Pair a second pad for play and leave A1 wired.

**Why does my controller connect to the console instead of the Zen?**

The pad reconnects to the host it last paired with. Turn the console off, or pair while it is off, so the Zen is the only host listening.

**Why does the blue light keep flashing and never stop?**

The pad was not accepted: not in pairing mode, too far away, low battery, or a pad with no Bluetooth support on the Zen. Xbox pads need the wireless adapter, a DualSense needs Create and PS rather than Share, and Cronus's Switch page lists the DualSense as USB only.

**Is Bluetooth or a cable better for the play pad?**

A cable, for anything timing-critical and for full features: Cronus says there is no 3.5 mm audio over Bluetooth, and lists a DualSense over Bluetooth without adaptive triggers, rumble, gyro or mic. Wireless adds variable delay. For everyday play, Bluetooth or the Xbox adapter is fine.

**Does Zen Link use Bluetooth?**

Only for setup: the Zenlink phone app finds the module over Bluetooth and gives it your Wi-Fi details, and holding its config button for five seconds restarts that setup. Native Mode then runs over Wi-Fi, with the PS5's own Bluetooth off. A pad can still pair to the Zen with P2, with the Bluetooth limits.
