---

The Cronus Zen is good at what it is for, running scripts and playing one console's controller on another, but it is fiddly to set up and carries ban risk that Activision, Respawn and Epic have stated in writing. This review is written for the second week, not the first hour: what the device is like once it is wired, once a script is loaded, once a console updates, and once you have read what a publisher says about it. Each criterion gets a score out of five and a sentence on why.

## Scores

| Criterion | Score | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Script ecosystem | 5 | Thousands of free community scripts in Cronus's GPC Library, over 200 GamePacks by Cronus's count, and paid sellers for the major games |
| What a script can do | 4 | Timing, anti-recoil, macros, remaps, M&K; it cannot see the screen, and that limit is real |
| Setup friction | 2 | Two cables, a matching pad on A1 for crossover play, a module and a list of console settings on PS5; the chain is where the first week goes |
| Mouse and keyboard | 3 | Works and is tunable; Cronus itself says many owners ran a separate M&K adapter alongside the Zen before it rebuilt its M&K engine |
| Console coverage | 4 | PS5 with Zen Link (or a manual bypass), Xbox Series, Xbox One, PS4, Switch (not Switch 2); PC works without official support |
| Build and screen | 4 | The OLED shows the slot, connected devices and GamePack menus; the 2023 model moved the outputs to USB-C |
| Tool | 3 | Zen Studio Live is what Cronus's current guide calls the new browser-based version of Zen Studio; its older guide files desktop Zen Studio under Zen Studio (Legacy) and documents known bugs in it |
| Support and documentation | 3 | Cronus runs two guides that disagree in places (the firmware version, the PS5 bypass); forum answers are uneven |
| Firmware stability | 4 | Regular releases, 2.3.0 to 2.3.2 between July and August 2026; a failed update is fixed by updating again |
| Risk carried | 1 | Activision, Respawn and Epic have stated positions against it; this is the criterion most reviews skip |

## What it does well

**Scripts.** The point of the device. A maintained anti-recoil script can be updated by its author after a weapon patch. A 2K timing script calibrates to your jumpshot. A GamePack gives you a settings menu, changeable from the OLED during play, instead of code. [Scripts by game](/docs/cronus-zen-scripts-by-game) shows the range; [how the Zen works](/docs/how-the-cronus-zen-works) shows the limit.

**The screen.** You can see which slot is active, which devices are connected, and a GamePack's menu, without a PC. Devices without a screen rely on lights and an app. [Screen and LED meanings](/docs/cronus-zen-screen-and-led-meanings).

**Recovery.** An interrupted firmware update is fixed by updating again from the bootloader; Cronus's older guide puts a web-tool update at under 20 seconds, and its current guide says a Zen Studio Live update takes a while and must not be interrupted. Slots survive power cycles. [Firmware](/docs/cronus-zen-firmware-update-downgrade-recovery).

**Console breadth.** With the module it covers PS5, Xbox Series, Switch and the previous generation; not the Switch 2. [Compatibility tracker](/docs/cronus-zen-console-compatibility-tracker).

## What it does badly

| Weakness | What it looks like | Article |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The chain | Charge-only cable, wrong port, unsupported pad, unpowered hub: hours lost before the device does anything | [Not detected](/docs/cronus-zen-not-detected) |
| Wireless | Xbox pads go wireless only through the Xbox Wireless Adapter; PlayStation and Switch pads pair by Bluetooth but lose wired headset audio; in crossover play the pad on A1 stays connected | [Wired vs wireless](/docs/wired-vs-wireless-controllers-cronus-zen) |
| PS5 | An extra module, a 2.4 GHz network, and a list of PS5 settings Cronus's current guide requires: Communication Method set to Use USB Cable, console Bluetooth off, no rest mode while playing; without the module, a bypass that has to be repeated | [PS5 setup](/docs/cronus-zen-ps5-setup) |
| M&K feel | Tunable, but it is a stick translation and never quite a mouse | [Mouse and keyboard](/docs/cronus-zen-mouse-and-keyboard) |
| The desktop tool | "Device Connected But Not Responding", and an auto-update bug in Zen Studio 1.5.0 Build 24 that Cronus documents | [Zen Studio errors](/docs/zen-studio-errors) |
| Input lag | Small and constant; the wireless chain around it is what varies | [Input lag](/docs/cronus-zen-input-lag) |

## The risk, stated plainly

Activision's Ricochet team named the Zen on 2 February 2026, calls such devices cheating tools, and its enforcement policy runs up to permanent bans. Respawn named Cronus on 4 March 2026 for Apex Legends: permanent bans for confirmed accounts, no appeals for leniency. Epic lists the Zen as restricted hardware in Fortnite. Bungie said in April 2023 it would take action, including bans, against players who abuse such devices in Destiny 2. 2K has published nothing naming the Zen. Sony's 2024 update was a technical block, not an account action. That is the whole documented picture, and [Is the Cronus Zen detectable?](/docs/is-the-cronus-zen-detectable) keeps it current with sources. A review that gives the Zen five stars without this paragraph is not reviewing the product you will own.

## Who should buy one

| Player | Verdict |
| --- | --- |
| NBA 2K, wants a timing script | Yes; the script market is built around this case |
| Wants seller scripts that update after patches, any game | Yes |
| Wants to play a PlayStation pad on Xbox | Yes; crossover is a core Zen feature, though the XIM Matrix and Titan Two also list cross-console controllers |
| Wants to write their own input logic | Yes |
| Wants mouse aim and nothing else | No; [XIM Matrix](/docs/cronus-zen-vs-xim-matrix) |
| Wants paddles and nothing else | No; a DualSense Edge or Elite |
| Plays Call of Duty, Apex Legends or Fortnite and has not read the publisher's position | Not until you have |
| Expects every pad to go wireless without extras | Check first: Xbox pads need the Xbox Wireless Adapter, and Bluetooth pads lose wired audio |

## Verdict

The Zen is the most flexible device of its kind and among the most demanding to set up. Its script ecosystem is the reason to buy it, its chain is the reason people return it, and its risk is the reason to read one more page before you decide. [Is the Cronus Zen worth it?](/docs/is-the-cronus-zen-worth-it) puts the cost against each of those.

## FAQ

**Is the Cronus Zen good?**

At what it is for, yes: running scripts and GamePacks and playing one console's controller on another, with what Cronus calls the largest M.O.D. community. It is fiddly to set up, its mouse-and-keyboard mode trails purpose-built adapters, and Activision, Respawn and Epic have stated positions against it.

**What is the biggest weakness of the Cronus Zen?**

The chain. Two data cables, a pad matching the console on A1 for crossover play, a module and a list of console settings on PS5, and a desktop tool Cronus's older guide files as legacy. Most first-week problems are the chain, not the device.

**Who should not buy a Cronus Zen?**

Anyone who only wants mouse aim, anyone who only wants paddles, anyone who plays Call of Duty, Apex Legends or Fortnite and is not prepared for the publishers' stated positions, and anyone who needs Switch 2 support, which Cronus says it does not have.

**Is the PS5 Ultimate Edition worth the extra over the Zen?**

Only if you want its upgrade service and extended warranty. It is a Zen plus Zen Link in one box, and in Cronus's own product listings on 7 October 2026 it cost more than the two bought separately. If PS5 is on your list, Cronus recommends Zen Link either way; its current guide describes the bypass that works without it as a manual procedure that has to be repeated.

**How long does setup take?**

Cronus's current guide says the firmware update takes a while and must not be interrupted, and Zen Link needs a one-time setup in Cronus's Zenlink phone app plus a list of PS5 settings. Most first-day time goes on cables, console settings and the tool; a charge-only cable in the box can turn it into hours.

**Does this site sell the Zen or get paid for this review?**

No. Cronus Wiki is independent of Cronus and Collective Minds and not affiliated with any game publisher.
