# Zen Studio updates tracker: current build, known bugs, and what to do about each

As of 7 October 2026, Cronus's changelog lists Zen Studio Live 1.0.9 (8 September 2026) as the newest release of the browser tool, which Cronus's current guide calls the new browser-based version of Zen Studio. Cronus's older guide lists 1.6.1 Build 82 as the latest desktop Zen Studio and files it under "ZEN STUDIO (LEGACY)"; the current guide's Downloads page lists only Zen Studio Live. Two things on your desk have versions: the firmware on the Zen and the tool on the computer. ## Keeping the tool healthy

- **One tool at a time.** Desktop and Live both holding the Zen is what Live's "in use elsewhere" state reports.
- **PROG only for the tool.** The Zen's CONSOLE/PC port is for play and firmware; [ports and cables](/docs/cronus-zen-ports-and-cables).
- **Unplug PROG before playing.** Cronus says it must be disconnected before you start any game.
- **Keep your .gpc files** outside the tool. Cronus says scripts cannot be backed up from the Zen, and Reset Zen Studio erases the desktop app's stored files.
- **After a firmware update, open the tool once** before you need it, so any mismatch shows on a quiet day.

## FAQ

**What is the latest Zen Studio version?**

As of 7 October 2026, Cronus's changelog lists Zen Studio Live 1.0.9 (8 September 2026) as the newest browser release, and its older guide lists 1.6.1 Build 82 as the latest desktop build. Desktop Zen Studio shows yours under Help, About Zen Studio (F1).

**Should I use Zen Studio or Zen Studio Live?**

Zen Studio Live, in Chrome, for most people: Cronus's current guide calls it the new browser-based version of Zen Studio, starts setup there and lists no desktop download, and Live runs on Windows, macOS and Linux with nothing to install. Cronus's older guide files the desktop app under Zen Studio (Legacy); it remains for Windows users who already rely on it.

**Why does Zen Studio say it is more than a month old?**

You are on an old desktop build. Cronus says to update to 1.6.1 Build 82. If 1.5.0 Build 24 offers a Software Update window, Cronus says to cancel it, uninstall the old build and install the new one manually.

**Do I need to update Zen Studio when firmware updates?**

Cronus's Firmware Version Incompatible message means either the firmware or Zen Studio is out of date, so update both. Zen Studio Live updates itself when you reload, and shows when newer firmware is available for the connected Zen.

**Does Zen Studio work on Windows 11?**

Yes. Cronus lists Windows 10 and 11 for the desktop app, and Zen Studio Live runs in Chrome on Windows 11.

**Where do GamePack updates come from?**

From Cronus's servers, through the tool, so it needs an internet connection. If Zen Studio reports Unable To Download GamePacks, Cronus says your provider or firewall is blocking its server and suggests a VPN.
