Cronus Zen stopped working after a console system update: what to check, in order
If the Cronus Zen stopped working after a console update, power-cycle in order, update the pad and the Zen firmware, and on PS5 recheck the Zen Link settings.
If the Zen stopped working after a PS5 or Xbox system update, power-cycle the console and the Zen in order, let the console update the pad, bring the Zen to the latest firmware Cronus lists (2.3.2, released 18 August 2026), and on PS5 recheck the Zen Link settings. Most of the time that is the whole job. Once, in January 2024, a PS5 update ended the Zen's old PS5 connection outright. This page is the order to work through after any update, and how to tell which of those you are looking at.
What a console update can touch
| Console update can change | Effect on the Zen | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing relevant | None | Nothing |
| The pad's own firmware | The pad may need the update the console offers | Plug the pad straight into the console; accept the update |
| A PS5 setting Zen Link needs | The PS5 does not connect through the Zen; Cronus says Communication Method set to Use USB Cable is critical | Recheck the PS5 settings on Cronus's Zen Link setup page |
| The connection method itself | The Zen stops working on that console for everyone | Wait for Cronus; the January 2024 PS5 case below |
| Nothing, but the update rebooted everything | The Zen paired before the console was ready | Power cycle in order, or tap the Zen's reset button |
The order
| Step | Do | If it works now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Console fully off. Unplug the Zen. Console on. Wait for the home screen. Plug the Zen in; tap its reset button if the pad does not pair | Boot order; done |
| 2 | Plug the A1 pad straight into the console. Accept any controller update the console offers. Put it back on A1 | Pad firmware; done |
| 3 | Update the Zen firmware; Firmware | You were behind the version Cronus's fixes assume |
| 4 | PS5: recheck the settings on Cronus's Zen Link setup page; the Zen Link light should settle on dim white, and red blinks mean a failure you can count; PS5 setup | A setting had changed; done |
| 5 | Slot 0. Play for a minute | The device is fine; the script is the problem; Script not working |
| 6 | Read Cronus's guide page for your console and its firmware changelog | If the console's page has changed, follow what it now requires |
The PS5 settings Cronus's current Zen Link setup page requires are under Power Saving (no rest mode while playing games, USB power always supplied in rest mode, stay connected to the internet, turn on from network, controllers never turn off) and Accessories (vibration and trigger effect intensity at Strong (Standard), Communication Method set to Use USB Cable, Bluetooth off). Cronus's older Zen Link page also listed Console Sharing and Offline Play, Remote Play and a console name, and recommended turning off automatic update downloads and installs; the current page lists none of these.
Routine versus real break
| Signal | Routine | Real break |
|---|---|---|
| Slot 0 works after steps 1 to 4 | Yes | |
| Cronus's guide page for the console | Unchanged | Changes, as the PS5 coverage did when it moved to Zen Link |
| Community reports (forums, Reddit) | Scattered posts, mixed | Many reports from one console at once, often with press coverage |
| Pad works plugged straight in, not through the Zen, after every step | Yes | |
| How long | Minutes | Not up to you; see the 2024 dates below |
January 2024 was the real kind. Press reports at the time (mp1st, 24 January 2024) tied a break to PS5 system software 24.01-08.60, with users reporting the controller working for a second through the Zen and then turning off. Cronus's changelog adds Zen Link support in firmware 2.2.4, dated 5 September 2024, and PS5 Native Mode in firmware 2.2.14, dated 5 November 2025. Its PS5 page today supports every PS5 model either with Zen Link or through a bypass, and its bypass page recommends Zen Link instead; its older guide labelled the bypass "No Longer Supported". Cronus's Xbox pages record no comparable change; Xbox Series setup. The changelog keeps the dated record.
What not to do
- Do not fall back on the bypass if Zen Link is an option. Cronus's current guide documents the PS5 bypass, but as a manual procedure that has to be repeated, and recommends Zen Link instead; PS5 setup has the outline.
- Do not downgrade the console. It is not possible on PS5 or Xbox in any supported way.
- Do not reflash the Zen five times. One flash to the current firmware is the whole of step 3.
- Do not assume the script broke. Slot 0 first. A script that worked before the console update still works unless the game also updated; Scripts by game explains what game patches change.
Keeping this a five-minute job
| Habit | Why |
|---|---|
| Zen firmware current | Cronus's current guide lists 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) as the latest release |
| Pad firmware current | Plug the pad straight into the console now and then |
| PS5: automatic update downloads and installs off | Cronus's older Zen Link page recommended it as a precaution against updates that affect the Zen or Zen Link; you then choose when to update |
| PS5: no rest mode while playing; controllers never turn off | Both are on Cronus's Zen Link settings list |
| Keep .gpc files | Cronus says a hard reset erases every script stored on the Zen, so a reset means reprogramming from your own copies |
| Read Cronus's page for your console after every console update | Thirty seconds that saves an evening |
Quick reference
| Situation | Do this |
|---|---|
| Console just updated, Zen not detected | Power cycle in order; tap the Zen's reset button |
| Pad not picked up after the update | Pad straight into the console; accept its update |
| PS5 Zen Link light red, or the PS5 will not connect | Count the red blinks; recheck Communication Method and the Zen Link settings |
| Slot 0 fine, script not | Game patch, not the console |
| Cronus's page for the console has changed | Follow what it now requires |
Frequently asked
- Can a PS5 or Xbox update break the Cronus Zen?
- It has happened on PS5: press reports in January 2024 tied a PS5 system update to the Zen's PS5 connection breaking. Cronus now supports the PS5 through Zen Link, which it recommends, or a bypass that has to be repeated. Its older guide also recommended turning off automatic PS5 update downloads and installs as a precaution.
- What should I do first after a console update?
- Power-cycle console and Zen in order, then plug the pad straight into the console so the console can update the pad's own firmware. That clears the routine cases.
- Does the Zen need a firmware update after every console update?
- No, but keep it current. Cronus's current guide lists firmware 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) as the latest release; its older guide still shows 2.2.14.
- How do I know if this is a real break?
- A real break hits everyone on that console at once and shows up as a change to Cronus's guide page for the console, as when its PS5 coverage moved to Zen Link. If slot 0 works after the checks, it was a re-pair, not a break.
- Should I turn off automatic console updates?
- On PS5, Cronus's older Zen Link page recommended disabling both Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically as a precaution; its current setup page does not mention it. Turning them off lets you choose when to update, so you can do it when you have time to run the checks on this page.
- Does an Xbox update change anything for the Zen?
- Cronus's Xbox pages record no update that stopped the Zen. Updates can still push new pad firmware, which the pad receives while plugged straight into the console.
