Cronus Zen Xbox Series setup, step by step
Cronus Zen Xbox Series setup: output protocol XBOX ONE X/S, CONSOLE/PC to the console, an Xbox Series pad on A1, and any other pad or mouse on A3.
To set up a Cronus Zen on an Xbox Series X or S, set its Emulator Output Protocol to XBOX ONE X/S in Zen Studio, connect the Zen's CONSOLE/PC port to the console, and plug an Xbox Series controller into A1; any other controller, mouse or keyboard goes on A3. There is no expansion module and no bypass on Xbox. The controller on A1 has to stay connected for the whole session whenever you play with something else, and most failed setups come down to a charge-only cable or a controller Cronus does not support.
What you need
| Item | Requirement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cronus Zen | Current firmware; Cronus's current guide lists firmware 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) as the latest release | Update before the console sees the device |
| Controller for A1 | An Xbox Series X/S controller (model 1914) or Elite Series 2 (model 1797); Cronus also lists tested licensed pads | The pad the console sees; Cronus puts the controller that matches the console on A1 for crossover |
| Cables | Known-good data cables; Cronus's setup specifies a short USB cable from CONSOLE/PC to the console | Charge-only cables power the Zen and carry nothing |
| Computer | Chrome, for Zen Studio Live and the firmware update; Cronus's output-protocol step uses Zen Studio's Device panel with the Zen on a Windows PC | Setup only |
| Optional | Another controller, a mouse and keyboard, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for A3 | The pad you play with need not be the one on A1 |
Cronus's current guide is built around Zen Studio Live, the browser-based version of Zen Studio: nothing to install, Chrome recommended, Windows, macOS and Linux supported. Its USB setup page still gives the output protocol as Zen Studio, Device Panel, Xbox One X/S, with the Zen's PROG port connected to a Windows PC, so the steps below follow that.
How authentication works on Xbox
Xbox consoles accept only licensed controllers, and the Zen has no licence of its own. Instead it presents the controller on A1 to the console. Cronus's Device panel calls this the mirror: the console sees whatever controller is on A1, and anything connected to A2, A3 or Bluetooth reaches the console as that controller. That is why:
- The A1 controller must be one the console accepts. Cronus's Xbox Series page supports all official Xbox Series X|S controllers, and its Controller page lists tested licensed third-party pads; Cronus says an unlisted controller has not been tested, which does not mean it will not work. Cronus's older guide lists unlicensed Xbox controllers, flight sticks and the Thrustmaster ESWAP S PRO and ESWAP X PRO as not compatible.
- The A1 controller must stay connected the whole time you use the crossover controller; Cronus says so in its USB setup.
- The A1 controller does not have to be the one you play with. Plug your play pad into A3 and leave the A1 pad where it is.
The authentication controller covers the A1 role in more depth.
Step by step
- Firmware. Unplug every cable from the Zen, hold the small blue reset button and, still holding it, plug a data cable into the Zen's CONSOLE/PC port and the computer. In Zen Studio Live click Update Firmware (bottom left), Connect Device, choose Cronus Zen, Connect, then Update to latest, and wait for "Firmware updated" without unplugging. Cronus's web update tool in Chrome or Edge is the alternative. Firmware covers every failure.
- Output protocol. Connect the Zen's PROG port to the PC, open Zen Studio, select the Device panel and set the Emulator Output Protocol to XBOX ONE X/S (Cronus's current pages write it Xbox One X/S). Cronus's older guide notes a hard reset sets it to AUTO, which still works for most setups.
- Console. Connect the Zen's CONSOLE/PC port to a USB port on the Series X or S with a short data cable.
- Controller on A1. Plug the Xbox Series controller into A1 with a data cable. Cronus says that after a few seconds it powers on and syncs with the Zen. If nothing happens, use Cronus's connection fix under "If it worked yesterday" below, then swap the cable, then the controller.
- Second input, optional. Plug the pad you want to play with, a mouse or a keyboard into A3, and A2 if you need two devices.
- Slot and test. Choose a slot on the device, or load a script first through the PROG port; How to put a script on the Zen. Unplug PROG before playing. Test every button, both sticks and the guide button in the dashboard before joining a match.
What you should see
The OLED and LEDs confirm each stage. These are the states Cronus documents.
| You see | What it means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| "Zen Bootloader", LEDs purple and blue | Reset button held while connecting; firmware mode | Run the update tool, or reconnect without holding the button |
| LEDs flash red, green, blue, then the gear-head logo | Firmware update or hard reset succeeded | Carry on |
| Collective Minds logo | No GamePack or script active | Press the right blue memory slot button to choose a slot |
| Joypad and console icons lit in Zen Studio's Device panel | Controller and console detected | Carry on |
| Blank OLED on either port | Cronus says the Zen is defective | Warranty |
| E3, E3001 or E3002 error code | Firmware corrupted or missing, per Cronus's current troubleshooting page, typically from an interrupted install or power loss during an update | Bootloader recovery and a reflash; error messages |
Controllers on Xbox
From Cronus's Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Controller pages.
| Pad | On A1 (console sees it) | On A3 (play) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X/S controller (1914) | Yes | Yes | The default choice; Cronus names it for A1 in crossover |
| Elite Series 2 (1797), Elite (1698) | Yes | Yes | USB and the Xbox Wireless Adapter; Cronus's changelog lists improved Elite Series 2 detection in firmware 2.3.0 |
| Xbox One controllers (1537, 1697, 1708) | Listed on Cronus's Xbox One page | Yes | Cronus puts the controller that matches the console on A1 |
| Licensed third-party Series pads on Cronus's list (PowerA, Razer, Turtle Beach, Nacon, PDP, Victrix, GameSir) | Tested by USB | Yes | Cronus lists the Scuf Instinct and Instinct Pro as working only after flashing stock Xbox firmware, and the GameSir G7 SE after a one-time setup; check the model, as Series and One versions can share a name |
| Unlicensed Xbox pads, flight sticks, Thrustmaster ESWAP S/X PRO | No | No | Cronus's older guide lists them as not compatible |
| DualSense, DualShock 4 | No | Yes | DualSense by USB: Cronus lists it over Bluetooth as limited; DualShock 4 also by Bluetooth |
| Any Xbox pad over Bluetooth | No | Via the Xbox Wireless Adapter only | Cronus says Bluetooth is not supported for Xbox pads |
To use an Xbox pad wirelessly, Cronus's procedure is: plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter into A3, connect the controller to A2 with a USB cable, wait a few seconds, then unplug it; the adapter's LED blinks, then turns solid white when the controller is paired. Cronus also warns your controller might not charge through the Zen, so start with it charged. Wired vs wireless controllers on the Zen has the longer list, and DualSense Edge and Elite the premium-pad notes.
If it worked yesterday and not today
When an Xbox controller does not connect through the Zen, Cronus's current fix is a power cycle with the controller still attached: unplug both USB cables from the Zen (CONSOLE/PC and PROG), wait a few seconds so it powers off fully, and plug them back into the same ports. If the controller still does not respond, hold its Xbox button to turn it on; if the problem persists, hard reset the Zen and repeat. Then check the physical chain.
| Check | Fix |
|---|---|
| Both cables seated, both data cables | Reseat; swap for known cables |
| A1 pad still a supported Xbox pad, still on A1 | Move it back from A3 |
| Output protocol | If a hard reset set it to AUTO and something misbehaves, set XBOX ONE X/S again |
| Firmware current | Update; Cronus lists 2.3.2 as the latest release, and a 0.0.0 reading means an interrupted update |
| Controller battery | Cronus says pads might not charge through the Zen; charge it or fit fresh batteries |
| Console port | Try another USB port on the console |
If that does not fix it, Cronus Zen not detected is the ordered diagnostic, and controller not recognised covers the A1 side specifically.
Quick reference
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Console does not see the controller | Charge-only cable, or a pad Cronus does not list on A1 | Data cable; an Xbox Series controller on A1; Cronus's power cycle with the pad attached |
| Zen not seen by the console | Cable in PROG instead of CONSOLE/PC, or a charge-only cable | CONSOLE/PC port, short data cable |
| Crossover pad ignored | No Xbox Series controller on A1 | Put one on A1; play pad on A3 |
| Session drops mid-game | A1 cable loose, or a flat controller | Reseat; charge the pad |
| Xbox pad will not pair wirelessly | Tried Bluetooth | Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3, pad on A2 for a few seconds |
| Script inert | No slot selected | Press the memory slot button |
Frequently asked
- Do I need a special controller for the Cronus Zen on Xbox?
- For crossover play, yes: Cronus's setup puts the controller that matches the console on A1 as the authentication (AUTH) controller, and says it must stay connected the whole time you use the crossover controller.
- Does the authentication controller have to stay plugged in?
- Yes. Cronus says the AUTH controller on A1 must stay connected the whole time you use the crossover controller. If its cable comes out mid-session, expect the controller to drop.
- Can I play wirelessly on Xbox through the Zen?
- With the play pad, yes. Xbox pads need the Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3, since Cronus says Bluetooth is not supported for them; a DualShock 4 pairs by Bluetooth. The A1 controller stays on its cable.
- Does the Cronus Zen work on Xbox Series S as well as X?
- Yes. Cronus lists the Xbox Series X and Series S Digital as supported, and its Xbox One page lists every Xbox One model.
- Can I use a PlayStation controller on Xbox through the Zen?
- Yes, as the pad you play with on A3, while an Xbox Series controller sits on A1; Cronus's own crossover example is a DualSense on an Xbox Series X. Use a USB cable: Cronus lists a DualSense over Bluetooth as limited, without adaptive triggers, rumble, gyro or mic.
- Do I need the Zen Link module on Xbox?
- No. Zen Link is Cronus's PS5 route. On Xbox the Zen connects by USB from its CONSOLE/PC port.
