Cronus Zen glossary: GPC, slots, GamePacks, Zen Link, the authentication controller, M&K and risk terms, each defined in a sentence or two with a link.
This glossary defines the terms you meet in Cronus Zen guides, script notes and seller listings, in a sentence or two each, in the order you are likely to meet them, with a link to the article that covers each one properly.
The device
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Cronus Zen | The current device: a USB pass-through that rewrites controller input according to a script before the console sees it. Sold in a 2020 model (micro-USB and mini-USB outputs) and a 2023 model (USB-C); Cronus's product listing says the ports are the only difference | How the Cronus Zen works |
| CronusMAX Plus | The previous generation. Cronus's comparison lists PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and no support for PS5, Xbox Series or Switch | Zen vs CronusMAX vs PS5 Ultimate Edition |
| Zen Link | Cronus's Wi-Fi expansion module, sold separately. Cronus recommends the A1 port for it; it joins a 2.4 GHz network and gives PS5 Native Mode, the PS5 route Cronus recommends. Also lets you install and configure GamePacks from a smartphone over Wi-Fi | PS5 setup |
| PS5 Ultimate Edition | The Zen and Zen Link sold as one bundle, with an upgrade service and an extended warranty | Same |
| OLED | The Zen's 128 by 64 pixel screen. Shows the slot, status messages, GamePack menus and anything a script draws | Screen and LED meanings |
| Bootloader | The firmware-updating mode, entered by holding the small blue reset button while connecting CONSOLE/PC to a computer. The OLED reads "Zen Bootloader" and, Cronus says, the LEDs glow purple and blue | Firmware |
| Hard reset | Cronus's factory reset: with nothing connected, hold P1 and P2 while connecting CONSOLE/PC for at least four seconds until the LEDs flash red, green, blue. Returns settings to factory defaults; Cronus says to back up M&K profiles and keep copies of scripts first | Slots and memory |
| Power cycle | Unplug and reconnect CONSOLE/PC. Zen Studio's Reset Device button does the same without touching the cable. The first move for a stuck Zen | Same |
| P1, P2 | The two large blue buttons either side of the OLED. Cronus labels P1 the memory slot button and P2 the Bluetooth pairing button; both together while connecting is the hard reset | Bluetooth pairing |
| Firmware | The code running on the Zen, updated through the bootloader. Cronus's current guide lists firmware 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) as the latest release, with 2.3.3 Beta 1 (8 September 2026) as a beta; its older guide still shows 2.2.14 | Changelog |
The ports
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| CONSOLE/PC (output port) | The port to the console, or to a PC for play; Cronus labels it "controller output, also firmware update". The Zen's power source | Ports and cables |
| PROG | The port to a computer for Zen Studio. On PC, Cronus says to unplug it before a game starts | Same |
| A1 | The input Cronus labels "primary controller (no crossover), pass-thru auth controller (crossover)". On PS5, Zen Link goes here | The authentication controller |
| A3 | The input for the pad you play with in crossover, the mouse in the M&K layout, a racing wheel, the Xbox Wireless Adapter, and the controller on PS5 | Wired vs wireless |
| A2 | The input for the keyboard in the M&K layout, a second crossover device, and the temporary cable when pairing an Xbox pad to the adapter | Same |
| Data cable | A USB cable with data wires, as opposed to charge-only. The single most common cause of "not detected" | Not detected |
Authentication
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication controller (AUTH controller, licence donor) | In crossover play, the pad on A1 that matches the console. Cronus calls A1 the "mirror": the console sees whatever is there while you play on another device. Not used on PS5 with Zen Link or on Switch | The authentication controller |
| Crossover | Playing one console's controller on another console, with a matching pad on A1 | Same |
| Passthrough | Slot 0: the Zen forwards controller input unchanged. Useful for testing whether a problem is the script or the chain | Script not working |
| Bypass | A way of using the Zen on PS5 without Zen Link. Cronus's current guide documents it as a manual procedure that has to be repeated and recommends Zen Link instead; its older guide marks it "No Longer Supported" | PS5 setup |
Scripts
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| GPC | The scripting language. C-like, plain text, compiled in Zen Studio | How to put a script on the Zen |
| Script | A GPC program written by anyone, loaded into a slot. Free or paid, from Cronus's GPC Library, the community or a seller | Same |
| GamePack | A pre-configured per-game pack Cronus distributes in Zen Studio, configured in a menu and programmed into a slot; options can also be changed from the OLED menu during play | Same |
| GPC Library | Cronus's library of community scripts inside Zen Studio. Cronus says it holds thousands of free scripts and needs a registered Zen | Free scripts |
| Slot | One of eight 32 KB memory slots on the Zen, each holding one compiled script or GamePack. Stored in flash, so it survives power cycles | Slots and memory |
| Compile | Turning GPC text into bytecode the firmware runs. Errors stop it; warnings do not. Desktop Zen Studio keeps a legacy 16-bit compiler for older scripts | Zen Studio errors |
| Program | Writing compiled scripts into the slots: Program Device in desktop Zen Studio, Program Slots in Zen Studio Live. Cronus traces programming errors mostly to a faulty cable or corrupt Zen Studio files; program again | Same |
| Persistent variables (SPVARs, BVARs) | Storage that survives power cycles. Cronus lists 64 SPVARs per slot on the Zen; firmware 2.3.0 added BVARs, 1024 extra 16-bit values per slot. A script that uses them remembers settings; one that does not, forgets them | Slots and memory |
| Activation combo | A button combination a script waits for before doing anything. A common reason a script looks inert | Script not working |
| Calibration | A first-run step in timing scripts where the script measures your release or a game timing and stores it | Same |
| Anti-recoil | A script that pulls the stick against a weapon's recoil pattern while firing | Scripts by game |
| Rapid fire | A held button sent as repeated presses. Cronus notes the game still decides how fast a weapon can fire | Same |
| Timing script (green script, release script) | A script that presses and releases a button inside a game's timing window, the basis of NBA 2K shooting scripts | Same |
Tools
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Zen Studio | The desktop Windows program for compiling, programming slots, GamePacks, M&K settings and firmware. Cronus's older guide files it under "Zen Studio (Legacy)" and names 1.6.1 Build 82 as the latest build; the current guide's Downloads page lists only Zen Studio Live | Changelog |
| Zen Studio Live | What Cronus's current guide calls the new browser-based version of Zen Studio, and the tool it starts setup with. Nothing to install; Chrome recommended; Windows, macOS and Linux supported, iOS not | Same |
| Find Device | The Zen Studio button Cronus gives for "Device Connected But Not Responding", when the app has lost its pairing with the Zen | Zen Studio errors |
| Reset Zen Studio | Tools menu item that resets the app's own files and settings on the computer, not the Zen; part of Cronus's fix for "stuck on programming" | Same |
| Firmware update tool | Cronus's web update tool for Chrome and Edge, the updater in Zen Studio Live, and the firmware tool in desktop Zen Studio | Firmware |
| Output protocol | The Device panel setting for which system the Zen presents itself to. Cronus lists six: PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One X/S, Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC/mobile. A hard reset sets it to Auto, which Cronus says must be corrected when using Zen Link | PC setup |
| Tournament Mode | An operational mode that, in Cronus's words, disables scripts, macros and GamePacks while keeping crossover controllers and button remapping | Script not working |
Mouse and keyboard
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| M&K (MK, mouse and keyboard mode) | The Zen's translation of a mouse into right-stick movement and keys into buttons | Mouse and keyboard |
| M&K Settings | The Zen Studio panel with sensitivity, boost, ballistic curves, deadzone compensation and shape, and six independent layouts | Same |
| M&K profile (game profile) | A pre-tuned M&K configuration for a specific game, importable into Zen Studio | Same |
| Deadzone compensation | The setting that lifts small mouse movements over the range of stick values the game ignores | Same |
| Ballistic curve | The shape of the mouse-speed-to-stick-value translation; Cronus's panel offers six | Same |
| MK switch | A switch that moves one mouse and keyboard between the PC and the Zen; Cronus's version is also a powered hub | Same |
Risk
| Term | Meaning | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Ricochet | Activision's anti-cheat. Its post of 2 February 2026 names the Cronus Zen and XIM Matrix as targets of new detections in Call of Duty | Is the Cronus Zen detectable? |
| Restricted hardware | Epic's category in Fortnite; its help page lists the Cronus Zen and Cronus Max as examples | Same |
| Undetectable | A word this site does not use about any device or script, because nobody outside an anti-cheat team can know it | Same |
| Input lag | The delay the chain adds between a press and the console seeing it. Constant on a wired setup; variable on wireless | Input lag |

Frequently asked
- What is GPC?
- The scripting language the Zen runs. It looks like C. Scripts are plain-text .gpc files compiled in Zen Studio and programmed into a slot.
- What is a GamePack?
- A pre-configured per-game pack Cronus distributes in Zen Studio, built with scripting experts from its community, configured through a menu instead of code and programmed into a slot like any script.
- What is a slot?
- One of eight memory slots on the Zen, 32 KB each in Cronus's spec, each holding one compiled script or GamePack. Slot 0, the logo screen, runs nothing.
- What is the difference between Zen Studio and Zen Studio Live?
- Zen Studio is the desktop Windows program, filed under 'Zen Studio (Legacy)' in Cronus's older guide and not listed on the current guide's Downloads page. Zen Studio Live is what Cronus's current guide calls the new browser-based version of Zen Studio: nothing to install, Chrome recommended, Windows, macOS and Linux supported, iOS not.
- What is the difference between a script and a GamePack?
- A GamePack is a pack Cronus distributes with a settings menu; a script is anyone's GPC file. Both occupy one slot each and are programmed the same way.
- What does passthrough mean?
- Slot 0, shown as the logo on the OLED: no script or GamePack is running and the Zen forwards controller input unchanged. It is how you test whether a problem is the script or the chain.
