Cronus Zen FAQ: the questions people ask, one paragraph each
Cronus Zen FAQ: fifty questions answered in a paragraph each, from PS5 and Zen Link to slots, firmware, LEDs and ban risk, with links to the full articles.
This page answers the fifty questions Cronus Zen owners ask most, one paragraph each, with a full article behind every answer. The questions are grouped in the order a new owner meets them: what the device is, what it works on, how to wire it, how scripts and slots behave, what goes wrong, and what the risk is.
Where each group of questions goes deeper

| Wiring | PS5 setup, Xbox Series setup, PC setup, Ports and cables, The authentication controller |
| Scripts and slots | How to put a script on the Zen, Slots and memory, Firmware, Changelog |
| When it goes wrong | Not detected, Controller not recognised, Script not working, Disconnecting, Zen Studio errors, Screen and LEDs |
| Controllers and input | Wired vs wireless, DualSense Edge and Elite, Mouse and keyboard, Input lag |
| Risk and the market | Is the Cronus Zen detectable?, Scripts by game, Glossary |
The five answers that solve most problems
| Problem | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nothing sees the Zen | Usually a charge-only cable. Use a data cable in the right port |
| Nothing on A1 is recognised | A pad Cronus supports for that console, on A1, on a data cable |
| Script does nothing | Slot 0 is selected, or the activation combo has not been pressed |
| Drops every few minutes | Power or cable; Cronus suggests a powered hub |
| PS5 disconnects after seconds | Neither Zen Link nor the bypass is in use. With Zen Link, check its status light: on Cronus's current status-light page, magenta belongs to PS5 Native Mode starting up, green at the end means it succeeded, and red blinks mean something failed |
Where these answers come from
The device answers rest on Cronus's own pages, read on 7 October 2026: its older guide at guide.cronus.support (setup, PS5, Zen Link, Xbox Series, Switch, PC, hard reset, firmware errors, Zen Studio errors) and Cronus's current guide at guide.cronuszen.com (Zen Studio Live, PS5, PS5 bypass, Zen Link, Zen Link status light, 2026 changelog). The two guides disagree in places, most visibly on the firmware version and the PS5 bypass; where they do, this page follows the current guide and names the older one's position. Publisher positions are sourced in Is the Cronus Zen detectable?.
Questions not on this page
If your question is not here, it is probably about a specific script, and the script's author is the right place for it. If it is about the device and this page does not answer it, the editorial page explains how to reach the team, and questions that arrive more than once get added here with the next revision.
Frequently asked
- What is a Cronus Zen?
- A USB device that sits between a controller and a console and rewrites the controller's input according to a script before the console sees it. The console sees the controller the Zen presents, not a 'Cronus'.
- Does it modify the game or the console?
- No. It only changes the input stream. Nothing is installed on the console and no game file is touched.
- Does the Cronus Zen work on PS5?
- Yes. Cronus's current guide supports every PS5 model through the Zen Link expansion module or the PS5 bypass, and recommends Zen Link: it gives PS5 Native Mode with a one-time setup, while the bypass is a manual procedure that has to be repeated. Cronus's older guide marks the bypass 'No Longer Supported'.
- Does the Cronus Zen work on Xbox Series X and S?
- Yes. Cronus lists every Xbox Series console and official controller as supported. No module is needed; for crossover play with another console's pad, an Xbox controller must be connected to A1.
- Does it work on PC?
- It can be used on PC, but Cronus says it offers no official support for it, that the PROG cable must be unplugged before a game starts, and that some PC games detect and may block devices like it.
- Does it work on Nintendo Switch?
- Yes. Cronus lists the Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite (handheld play needs an OTG USB-C adapter) and says the Switch 2 is not supported. Turn on Pro Controller Wired Communication in the Switch's settings.
- Is there a Cronus Zen 2?
- No. Cronus sells the Zen, the Zen Link module, and the two together as the PS5 Ultimate Edition. The 2023 Zen moved its ports to USB-C; Cronus says that is the only difference from the 2020 model.
- What is Zen Link?
- Cronus's Wi-Fi expansion module, sold separately. Cronus recommends the A1 port for it; it joins a 2.4 GHz network and gives PS5 Native Mode, which Cronus says plays every PS5 game without a secondary PC or a complex Remote Play setup. It also lets you install and configure GamePacks from a smartphone over Wi-Fi.
- What is the PS5 Ultimate Edition?
- The Zen and Zen Link in one box, with an upgrade service and an extended warranty. In Cronus's own product listings on 7 October 2026 it cost more than the Zen and Zen Link bought separately.
- What is the authentication controller?
- In crossover play, the pad on A1 that matches the console; the console sees that pad while you play on another device. Cronus calls it the AUTH controller. On PS5 there is none, because Zen Link takes A1.
- Can the authentication controller be wireless?
- For crossover play, Cronus says the controller that matches the console must be connected to A1. Without crossover, an Xbox pad can go wireless through the Xbox Wireless Adapter on A3, and PlayStation and Switch pads pair by Bluetooth.
- Do I have to play on the authentication controller?
- No. In crossover play it stays on A1 while you play on a pad on A3, or on a mouse and keyboard.
- Which controller goes on A1 for Xbox?
- An Xbox Series or Xbox One controller: an official one, or a licensed third-party model on Cronus's verified list. Cronus says unlicensed Xbox controllers do not work.
- Which controller do I use on PS5?
- Zen Link goes on A1 and the pad on A3. A DualSense (CFI-ZCT1W) or DualSense Edge (CFI-ZCP1) gives every feature; Cronus also lists Xbox and Switch pads. There is no licence pad on PS5.
- Can I use a PlayStation pad on Xbox through the Zen?
- Yes: the PlayStation pad on A3, an Xbox pad on A1 for authentication. Cronus says buttons, triggers, touchpads, gyros and rumble are remapped automatically.
- What is the difference between the CONSOLE/PC and PROG ports?
- CONSOLE/PC goes to the console, or to a PC for play, and carries firmware updates. PROG goes to a computer for Zen Studio. Cronus says its most common Zen Studio error, Device Disconnected, usually means the cable is not in PROG or is faulty.
- Why does the Zen light up but nothing sees it?
- Usually a charge-only cable: it carries power and no data. Cronus's current guide says the Zen lights up on one but stays invisible to the computer. Swap it for a cable you know carries data.
- How do I tell if a cable is charge-only?
- Connect a phone to a computer with it. If the phone's files show up, it is a data cable; if they do not, it has no data wires. Cronus gives the same test.
- Can I use a USB hub?
- A powered one, with its own power supply, when a port does not supply enough power. Cronus suggests its MK Switch, which has a 5 V AUX port, and says a controller that will not turn on or randomly disconnects is the sign.
- What is Zen Studio?
- The desktop Windows 10/11 program for compiling scripts, programming slots, GamePacks, mouse-and-keyboard settings and firmware. Cronus's older guide files it under Zen Studio (Legacy) and names 1.6.1 Build 82 as the latest build; the current guide's Downloads page lists only Zen Studio Live.
- What is Zen Studio Live?
- What Cronus's current guide calls the new browser-based version of Zen Studio, and the tool it starts setup with. Nothing to install; Chrome is recommended; Windows, macOS and Linux are supported and iOS is not.
- Does Zen Studio work on a Mac?
- Use Zen Studio Live in Chrome. The desktop app is Windows-only; for it, Cronus says Boot Camp does not work on M1 and M2 Macs and points to a VMware Fusion virtual machine, while noting it does not offer Mac support.
- What is GPC?
- The C-like scripting language the Zen runs. Scripts are plain-text .gpc files compiled in Zen Studio.
- What is a GamePack?
- A pre-configured per-game pack Cronus distributes in Zen Studio, built with scripting experts from its community, configured through a menu and programmed into a slot. Its options can also be changed from the OLED menu during play.
- How many scripts can the Zen hold?
- Eight memory slots, 32 KB each in Cronus's spec, one script or GamePack per slot. Slot 0, the logo screen, runs nothing.
- Do scripts survive turning the Zen off?
- Yes. Scripts are stored in the Zen's flash memory. Reprogramming, Erase Memory Slots or a factory reset clears them, and Cronus notes scripts cannot be backed up from the device, so keep your .gpc files.
- Why does my script forget its settings?
- Its settings live in working memory unless the script saves them to persistent storage (SPVARs, or the BVARs added in firmware 2.3.0). Some save automatically, some on a combo, some never. The script's notes say which.
- How do I put a script on the Zen?
- Connect PROG to a computer, open Zen Studio Live (or the desktop Zen Studio), open or load the script, assign it to a slot, program the device, then select the slot with P1. Leave the cable in until programming finishes.
- Why is a slot empty after I programmed it?
- Usually the write did not complete. Program it again and leave the cable connected. For 'stuck on programming', Cronus's fix is to replug PROG, run Tools > Reset Zen Studio, then Find Device.
- What is the current firmware?
- Cronus's current guide lists firmware 2.3.2 (18 August 2026) as the latest release, with 2.3.3 Beta 1 (8 September 2026) as a beta. Its older guide still shows 2.2.14 and labels its updater button 'Latest 2.2.XX'. The updater's latest option installs whichever is current.
- How do I update firmware?
- With nothing else connected, hold the small blue reset button while connecting CONSOLE/PC to a computer, release when the OLED reads Zen Bootloader, then run Zen Studio Live's updater in Chrome or Cronus's web update tool in Chrome or Edge. Zen Studio Live ends with a Firmware updated message; with the web tool the LEDs flash red, green, blue.
- My Zen says firmware 0.0.0. Is it broken?
- Usually not. Cronus says it normally means an update was interrupted and the firmware is corrupt. Enter the bootloader and update again, and leave the cable and the page alone until it finishes.
- Can I downgrade firmware?
- Cronus's guide pages document updating to the latest release, not downgrading. The firmware article covers what is known. Keep your .gpc files first, because Cronus says scripts cannot be backed up from the Zen.
- What does a hard reset do?
- It is Cronus's factory reset: with nothing connected, hold P1 and P2 while plugging CONSOLE/PC into a console or PC, for at least four seconds, until the LEDs flash red, green, blue. Settings return to factory defaults; back up M&K profiles and keep copies of your scripts first.
- What does waiting for controller mean?
- The Zen has no controller it can use on A1 yet. Check the data cable, then the port, then that the pad is on Cronus's supported list for that console.
- What does the red, green, blue LED flash mean?
- A completed firmware update or a successful hard reset; Cronus documents the same red, green, blue sequence for both.
- What do the LED colours mean during play?
- Whatever the running script sets; GPC can control the LEDs, so the script's notes define them. During Bluetooth pairing, Cronus says the LEDs flash blue.
- Why does the Zen keep disconnecting?
- Often power or the cable: a weak port, an unpowered hub or a device drawing too much. Cronus suggests a powered hub. On PS5 with Zen Link, Wi-Fi range and other traffic on the network matter too.
- Does the Zen add input lag?
- Any device in the chain adds some delay. On a wired setup it stays constant; wireless pads and hubs add delay that varies. Constant delay is what timing scripts calibrate for; variable delay is what breaks them.
- Does mouse and keyboard through the Zen feel like PC?
- No. The mouse becomes right-stick movement and the game applies its own curves and aim assist; Cronus describes the goal as the best translation 'within console limitations'. It feels like a very precise controller.
- Which ports for mouse and keyboard?
- Controller A1, keyboard A2, mouse A3, with PROG to the PC for the M&K Settings panel, as Cronus's connection guide lays out. Cronus recommends an MK Switch so the same mouse and keyboard can go back to the PC.
- Can I use the Zen and Steam Input together?
- Better not. Two remapping layers fight. Disable Steam Input for the game, or run a passthrough slot and let Steam do it.
- Is the Cronus Zen detectable?
- Activision named the Zen in February 2026 and says its new detections look at how inputs behave. Respawn says accounts confirmed to be cheating with such devices in Apex Legends are permanently banned. Epic lists the Zen as restricted hardware in Fortnite. Nothing about it is undetectable.
- Did Sony ban the Cronus Zen?
- No account bans were reported. Sony's system update of 24 January 2024 stopped the Zen connecting to the PS5 without disconnecting, as Cronus said in a notice at the time. Cronus now recommends Zen Link on PS5.
- Will I get banned in NBA 2K?
- 2K has not named the Zen or any device. On 24 September 2026 it announced permanent NBA 2K27 bans for cheats and scripts used as shooting aids and other input manipulation since early access, with console or PC bans for repeat offenders.
- Is a used Zen safe to buy?
- Yes if the screen works and the firmware updates. Check it is not still registered to the previous owner: Cronus says that blocks your access to its community until it is unregistered. Ask whether Zen Link is included if you need PS5.
- Does the Zen work with a racing wheel?
- Through Cronus's Wheel Mode, which supports a listed set of older Logitech wheels (Driving Force GT, G25, G27) and Fanatec wheels on PlayStation with force feedback. Check your wheel against that list.
- Where do I get scripts?
- GamePacks are in Zen Studio. Cronus's GPC Library holds thousands of free community scripts for registered Zen owners. Paid scripts come from sellers; the scripts-by-game article lists the sources and what to expect from each.
