Cronus Zen ports and cables: which port does what, which cables fail
Cronus Zen ports explained: CONSOLE/PC to the console and for firmware, PROG for Zen Studio, A1 to A3 for controllers, and why charge-only cables fail.
The Cronus Zen's CONSOLE/PC port goes to the console and carries firmware updates, PROG goes to the computer for Zen Studio, A1 takes the controller that matches the console, and A2 and A3 take crossover controllers, mouse and keyboard. Most first-day problems are a cable in the wrong one or a cable that cannot carry data. This page is the reference for both, based on Cronus's port diagram on its quick start page and its setup guides.
The ports
| Port | Where | Connects to | Purpose | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CONSOLE/PC | Back; Cronus's current guide calls it the top port | Console, or PC for play | Controller output to the console; firmware updates in bootloader mode | Using it for Zen Studio |
| PROG | Right side | PC | Zen Studio and Zen Studio Live: scripts, slots, M&K settings | Using it for firmware, or leaving it connected while playing |
| A1 | Left side | The controller that matches the console; in crossover, the authentication controller; on PS5, the Zen Link module | The licence the console sees | A crossover pad in A3 with nothing in A1 |
| A2 | Front | Keyboard in mouse-and-keyboard use; a second device; an Xbox pad plugged in briefly to pair it with the Xbox Wireless Adapter | Extra input | Swapping keyboard and mouse ports |
| A3 | Front | The pad you play with in crossover, and on PS5 with Zen Link; the mouse; a racing wheel; the Xbox Wireless Adapter | Main input in crossover | Swapping keyboard and mouse ports |
| Reset button | On the back, small, blue | Held while connecting CONSOLE/PC: bootloader. A single tap is a step in some of Cronus's controller setups | Mistaking it for the hard reset, which is P1 and P2 | |
| P1 | Top, large blue button | Memory Slot button: changes slot | ||
| P2 | Top, large blue button | Bluetooth pairing button | ||
| P1 and P2 together | Both held while connecting CONSOLE/PC for 4 s or more: hard reset, which erases every script | Doing the hard reset to fix a stuck state; unplug and replug instead | ||
| Zen Link | Plugs into A1 | The Wi-Fi module, sold separately | PS5 Native Mode; installing and configuring GamePacks from a phone | Putting it anywhere but A1 |

Cronus's port diagram labels CONSOLE/PC "Controller Output, also Firmware Update". Cronus says the PROG cable must be disconnected before you start any game.
The cable rule
A USB cable has power wires and data wires. Many cables sold with chargers, and many that came with a controller years ago, have only the power wires. Cronus's current guide puts it plainly: on a charge-only cable the Zen lights up but stays invisible to your computer. The device looks alive and is invisible to the PC, the console, or the pad.
This one fact accounts for more support cases than anything else on this site. Before any other troubleshooting step, on any page, swap the cable for one you know carries data.
The ten-second test, from Cronus: connect your phone to your computer with the cable. If the phone's files show up, the cable carries data. If the phone only charges, it does not.
Cables also fail with age, and a cable that worked last month can be intermittent this month. Keep two known-good cables and treat any cable as suspect the moment a device becomes flaky.
Connectors: Cronus's current guide says the Zen has two USB-C ports, and that one short and one long USB-C cable are in the box. Some older Cronus pages mention a mini-USB cable for PROG or a micro-USB adapter, so if your unit is older, check its connectors before buying a cable.
Which cable where
| Connection | Must carry data | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Zen CONSOLE/PC to console | Yes | Direct into the console |
| Zen CONSOLE/PC to PC for firmware | Yes | Hold the reset button while connecting; Chrome or Edge |
| Zen PROG to PC for Zen Studio | Yes | Unplug before playing |
| Controller to A1 | Yes | The controller that matches the console; stays connected |
| Controller, keyboard, mouse or adapter to A2 or A3 | Yes | Wired is the simpler setup; wired vs wireless |
Power
The Zen is powered over USB and passes power on to what is plugged into A1, A2 and A3. Cronus ties several errors to a USB port that does not supply enough power: No Devices Found and DFU Download Failed State in the firmware tool, Device Disconnected in Zen Studio, and "USB Device Not Recognized" in Windows. Its fixes all point one way:
| Situation | Cronus's fix |
|---|---|
| A PC port without enough power | Another USB port, or a powered USB hub (Cronus names one with a 5 V AUX port) |
| A firmware update failing partway | Connect PROG as well as CONSOLE/PC and retry, or a powered hub |
| A Mac with USB-C ports that does not detect the Zen | A powered USB hub |
| Play on a console | CONSOLE/PC straight into the console |
A Zen that keeps disconnecting is the diagnostic that starts here.
Common wrong-port mistakes
| Symptom | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Zen Studio says Device Not Connected | Cable in CONSOLE/PC | Move it to PROG |
| Firmware tool cannot see the Zen | Cable in PROG, or not in bootloader | Move it to CONSOLE/PC; hold the reset button while connecting |
| Console ignores a crossover pad | Pad in A3 with nothing in A1 | The controller that matches the console in A1 |
| Console sees nothing | PROG connected to the console, or a charge-only cable | CONSOLE/PC, data cable |
| Mouse does nothing in M&K use | Keyboard and mouse swapped | Keyboard A2, mouse A3 |
| Game started with PROG still connected | PROG left in | Unplug PROG; Cronus says it must be out before any game |
Cronus Zen not detected walks the detection cases in order, and every one of them begins with the two rules on this page: right port, data cable. Screen and LED meanings lists what the OLED and LEDs show along the way.
Frequently asked
- Which port do I use for Zen Studio?
- PROG, on the right side of the Zen, for both Zen Studio and Zen Studio Live. The CONSOLE/PC port at the back is for the console and for firmware updates in bootloader mode.
- Which port does the controller go in?
- The controller that matches the console goes in A1. In a crossover setup, Cronus puts the matching authentication controller in A1 and the pad you play with in A3. On PS5 with Zen Link, the module goes in A1 and the controller in A3. For mouse and keyboard, keyboard in A2 and mouse in A3.
- How do I know if a cable is charge-only?
- Cronus's quick test: connect your phone to your computer with it. If the phone's files show up, it is a data cable; if the phone only charges, it is not. A charge-only cable lights the Zen up and leaves it invisible to the computer.
- Can I use a USB hub with the Cronus Zen?
- A powered one, where a port cannot supply enough power: that is Cronus's fix for weak PC ports and for some Macs. For play, Cronus's setup connects CONSOLE/PC directly to the console.
- Is the Zen's console port USB-C or micro-USB?
- Cronus's current guide says the Zen has two USB-C ports and ships with two USB-C cables. Some older Cronus pages refer to mini-USB or micro-USB cables, so check the connector on your own unit; only the cable end differs.
- Does the Zen need its own power supply?
- No. It is powered over USB. Cronus's fixes for power problems are another USB port, a powered USB hub, or, during a firmware update, connecting PROG as well as CONSOLE/PC.
